Friday, thank god

Once again I am freezing in the library.. and once again I am super tired. I haven't worked out yet, since today is my long run I'm forgoing the double workout, and waiting until eleven to run so my food will have some time to start digesting. I'll be having a bar at nine (170 calories, lots of simple sugars to digest quickly).

I'm definitely nervous about running my five miler, just because it will be my first real run and I'll get a better picture of how much muscle I've lost. From my most recent test runs I've gathered that my respiratory system and cardio system have definitly weakend.. today I'll be able to get a good measure of how far behind I am.
Hopefully my weight loss continues in order to offset any lack of training by the time Oct 1st comes along!

So I'm debating what to do with my birthday money. I'm leaning towards getting a pair of newtons, or other flat footwear. yesterday I ran a few steps barefoot outside and it felt aaamazing. I'm not brave enough to run alongside 45 barefoot just yet.. and hopefully I'll never be that brave. I really like the look of newtons, but I think it would be really fun to try a totally flat sneaker like a vibram five finger or something like that. However it might be pretty foolish to jump right into that without knowing how my body will respond. I'm having enough trouble getting back into it as is!

Anyway. This morning I weighed in at the exact same as yesterday morning. To me this means it's a "real" weight. Not just dehydration. In my illogical mind I wait for the second day at the same number for it to really count. I don't think I'll be at 153 in time for my birthday, but that's more than alright with me. As long as I can get down to 145 by the time school starts :)

I can't wait for people to start noticing. Last time I got really insecure about it, since it happened so fast and was such a stark change. I never wanted to talk about it to anyone besides Joshua and my parents, but I still LOVED that everyone made such a big deal about it. It also was different then - I had stopped "dieting" and was just restricting food by habit. I doubt I'll get there again since I don't have a wedding and major life change to initiate that type of behavior!

Well I'm going to kill time until I can eat breakfast by researching sneakers.

Mamma's Melody

So after my last entry I studied genetics for a while, then hiked it up to the gym again for round two. Since I'm going to be doing a "long" run tomorrow, and since my knee's been bothering me, I wanted to take it as easy as possible while still burning calories. So I walked on a treadmill and studied genetics for a half hour, then walked home and had lunch. Popcorn, pretzels, two cookies. !!!! What is it about dieting that always makes me want junk?? I know that I'll still lose weight since I'm restricting calories, but still. I guess part of it is that we don't have any fruit in the house, or good yogurt, and PB my good ol standby is just so very high in calories. hmf. I'm going to need to work on this.

After about two and a half hours of being a general bum (and watching The Prestige), I decided to walk back into town to buy myself an early birthday smoothie, a momma's melody from mellow moods, as my three o'clock meal. This means that my total mileage for today has been a minimum of seven miles. nine miles if I walk back home instead of waiting for Joshua. :) Three miles at the gym, six walking around town and home. Not too shabby! Can't wait to see if I have any major weight loss! The best birthday gift would be a drop to 150, but dropping four pounds in two days would be a bit much. It would only be water weight anyhow. And what's the point of being dehydrated when you're a runner? So... I guess I'll hope for a one pound drop between saturday (when I'm celebrating) and now.

I was reading this blog yesterday about a morbidly obese woman who dropped fifty pounds without anybody noticing. Jeeze. I'm happy with my four. Not that anyone but me and my belt (which is at that uncomfortable spot where one hole makes it too big and one makes it too small) have noticed.

Alright. Enough's enough.

Plan for tomorrow is as follows: sleep in until eight. Walk to library. Have breakfast, study medsurg, run five miles at eleven. DRINK GATORADE. diluted in half of course. calorie free of course. Follow with peanutbutter, banana, popcorn and soymilk.

Walk home around two, have a light snack, clean the house, make pizza, etc etc etc.

Saturday we'll be going to Susan's to celebrate my birthday by hanging out at the pool and going to see the final installment of Harry Potter. I'm definitly nervous about Saturday food-wise. I hate going to other people's houses when I'm trying to lose weight. Whenever people besides Joshua or my parents cook for me I feel like I need to eat a "normal" amount so that I don't come off as being rude. I think what I'll probably do is skip my nine and noon meals, have about 300 calories around eleven, and then not eat until dinner. That way I can have a normal dinner and the obligatory slice of birthday cake guilt-free. Maybe I'll be able to make it to the gym in the AM to burn off a few calories before hand.

I can't wait to get to the point in this diet where the weight just falls off and I don't even need to put thought into it; when it just becomes second nature. They say it takes twenty one days to form a habit. Today is day 16. This is the most consistent I've been about weight loss since we got married. And it's definitely off to the best start - eating 1200-1700 calories a day instead of the 500 like I used to whenever I wanted to drop a few pounds. I may not have a healthier attitude toward food, but at least I'm eating it without crying. Baby steps.

Yay! Joshua just called. He's getting out of work THREE HOURS earlier than he did yesterday. BEAM! This is also 35 minutes later than he is scheduled for:)

Now the great debate. Do I sit here and talk about losing weight, or go walk home and actually do it?

I think I just answered my own question.

The Good, the Bad, and the Chilly

The good: I'm down to 154.0, more than a 4lb drop from where I was a little over two weeks ago.

The bad: I fumbled on my running this morning. I am totally low on energy, which is probably related to getting less than 7 hours of sleep every night. I do better when I get 9+. which SUCKS since i loathe sleeping. I wish I could be one of those people who only need five or six. Sleeping is juch such a time waster.

Oh, and I'm cold here in the library.

Well.. focusing on the positives. I dropped about .6 from yesterday which was surprising since I about ate my body weight in junk food yesterday. If I keep up with this two lb a week drop I'll be 145 by the time school starts. !!!! But in order to keep up with that type of loss I'll have to cut about 1000 calories a day. Half from food and half from exercise.

Training begins again!

Back to blogging! It's always a great motivator in the begining of a training plan, but I never seem to update the weeks leading up to a race, so let's see if I can be consistant this time!

Okay well first off, here is my training plan:
Week 1: 1.5mi, 2.5mi, 2.5mi, 1.5mi, 5mi = 13 miles/week
Week 2: 1.5, 3, 3, 1.5, 7 = 16 miles/week
Week 3: 2, 3, 3, 2, 8 = 18 miles/week
week 4: 2, 2, 2, 2, 5 = 13 miles/week
Week 5: 2, 3, 3, 2, 9 = 19 miles/week
Week 6: 2, 4, 3, 2, 10 = 21 miles/week
Week 7: 2, 4, 3, 2, 11 = 22 miles/week
Week 8: 2, 3, 3, 2, 6 = 16 miles/week
Week 9: 2, 4, 3, 2, 12 = 23 miles/week
Week 10: 2, 4, 3, 2, 13 = 24 miles/week
Week 11: 2, 2, 2, 2, 6 = 14 miles/week
Week 12: 4, 3, 2, 1, RACE = 23.1 miles/week

I took about a month and a half off from serious running for a much needed mental break, so we'll see how fast I can up my mileage this time! It's supposed to be easier every time, and since I've been running (mostly) consistently for 2 and 1/2 years now, I don't think it should be too terribly bad. It's mostly going to be a mental struggle.

Lately I've been working out twice a day, M-F. Weight lifting or plyometrics in the morning, followed by running in the afternoon. It's been going great so far! I study in the library in between workouts and after running, so I think that I'll be able to update on a regular basis.

I'm also being pretty deligent about losing weight. I weigh in every morning, and occasionally in the evenings just for fun. It's been two full weeks, and I've lost three pounds. I want to lose at least ten more, but losing fifteen pounds would put me at my lowest weight in highschool. A weight that I only maintained for about a month, but I digress. My point is that I'll probably update about that on here too, to stay committed! I have a nice line graph taped up to a kitchen cabinet that I use to track my weight loss trends, and it's has a nice downward slope! The other thing that has helped is that I bought a new scale, a digital one with a .2 lb counter, which is 1000x easier to read than my old one, and much more accurate. The food plan that I've been following is this: small equal meals at 9, 12, 3, 6, and sometime after dinner. I don't count calories, I just use good judgement and avoid junky foods.

Here is what I've done this week for working out:
Monday - plyo (about a 50 minute power workout that absolutely KICKS my butt)
ran 2mi
Tuesday - ran 2.5 mi
plyo
Today - upper body strength training
will run 2.5 miles two hours from now

alright, that's more than enough for now.

Catch up

Well I haven't exactly been following my "training plan" like I had wanted to, but I think that I'll be getting P90X on monday, so I'll be able to start supplementing my running with that!

Let me tell you about my past few runs...
4/11: I ran to school, the back way, which I have rounded up quite librally to 3 miles. It wasn't that great of a run, I think I was too eager to get it over with. I ran way too fast and peetered out before I got to the nursing building.
4/13: I ran hills outside of my house. I would jog out and down, then sprint up the hill and jog to cool down. I repeated that four times, and then ran down the whole road to cool off. I felt pretty strong.
4/14: 1/2 mile repeats on a treadmill. I would run a 1/2 mile at 11:30m/m, then 10:30, 9:30, 8:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30. between each half mile I would walk for two minutes or so to lower my heart rate. it ended up being about 7 miles, including the walk home from the gym.
4/15: two miles on the treadmill... sucked. too eager to get it over with
4/16: walked in DC
4/17: hiked up MD heights
4/18: three on the treadmill while my mom did weights in the gym. also sucked, no energy, probably R/T hiking
4/21: fartlets, one mile warm up, one mile cool down, three miles of speed workouts. I ran the three miles in 32:06. I went for 5 minutes at 12, 4 at 11, 3 at 10, 2 at 9, one at 8, two at 9, three at 10, four at 11, five at 12, four at 11, and that was that! I felt great.
4/22: I ran three verrrry slow indoor miles. I felt very fatigued from the day before
today: I ran eight miles, five outside and three indoors. I felt great! until teh very very end, and joshua ran the last hill to our house with me which was great!

Here's hoping casey remembered to burn P90X for me... !!!!
Goal weight: 145 baby

RACE DAY

Eh so, I stopped blogging. Obv. But I wanted to jot down some notes about today's race! Which was, in a word, AWESOME.

SO last night I managed to get about 5 hours of solid sleep. By solid, I of course mean that I woke up briefly every hour and then fell back asleep.

We took the metro in to the city, arriving at about six thirty. It was incredibly beautiful to watch the sun rise over the capital.

There were SO many friggin people there - loved it. Really inspiring to see a blind man lining up to race :). Also, I'm pretty sure that he was 100x faster than me.

I was in the green coral, second to last, targeted pace for the group was 1hr 40-59mins. My best case scenario goal was to finish at 1hr 55mins. My medium case scenario was to beat 2 hours. My main goal was simply to finish. And finish I did!

The first mile wasn't to bad, I was very careful to pace myself, which sucked because I had to watch everyone pass me. But I was rewarded at the one mile mark to see that I had kept an even 11:30 m/m pace; my goal. One of my favorite parts of that first mile was crossing paths with the top finishers - the kenyans. they were BEAUTIFUL!

Miles 1-2 sucked, because I missed the mile marker, so I had no idea what was going on. Plus I was starting to seriously overheat.

Mile 3 I stopped, and took off both of my top layers, tied one around my waist, and carried the other. It was one hundred times better, and knowing that at the 5mile marker I would see joshua and susan really made this mile awesome.

Mile 4 was pretty good, since I was all jazzed up about running past joshua, and I was feeling great.

Miles 6-7.5 were HOT. I was majorly over heated, mostly because I was seriously dehydrated. at the second aid station that I passed, I guzzled down two waters and a gatorade, and walked for about 2 minutes. I do believe that quick respite saved my race! I had been seriously ready to give up completely.

mile 8 was my FAVORITE. we changed directions so the sun was behind us, and we had a great cool wind in our faces. I seriously felt light as a bird.

mile 9 I unplugged my headphones, and run like all hell. I started to lose energy, but the momentum of the spectators really kept me going. I saw J and S right before the finish line, which gave me the kick to really push for it. This mile I passed many people, in my mind making up for the first few.

Favorite moments include: the sign that said "Tiger Blood" in reference to Charlie Sheen; a picnic table at mile 8 with a sign that said "Free Beer and Oreos"; the entire mile 8; FINISHING!; the gingerbread muffin at the end; how there were 195 portapoties, but they only had the key for 20; finishing in 1:51:22 with an average pace of 11:09; running negative splits!
