And it' really bothering me since I had a popcorn kernel stuck in between my teeth. grr.
Well I didn't update yesterday because I took the day off. The night before was pretty horrible due to headaches and insomnia. I believe both were exercise induced; I had two pretty rigorous workouts that day.
So today I did my 3.5mi hill workout and will later do plyo, tomorrow will be my recovery run and sat will be my 8miler.
Yesterday and today my weigh-ins were the same: 150.6
SO CLOSE to dropping below that dreadful mark!! I'm just trying to keep on keeping on, and not cut too much food out of my diet. Also trying to keep in mind that not every week will be like last week!
Anyway, my new goal is to reach 140 by freedom's run. I would be able to run so much easier if I could delete ten pounds of body fat!! I think it's reasonably achievable. I mean, I'll be happy to be at or below 145, but being at or below 140 would just be so much better. It would also be my lowest adult weight!! But let's not get too ahead of ourselves here.
In other news, I am going to start doing some barefoot runs!! I walked home and back to the library barefoot today and it just felt so amazing. (other than a splinter and a few sharp rocks) So I'm going to prepare by walking as much as possible barefoot outside this week, and next Thursday I'll give it a go for my 2 miler. I figure that by then my feet will have some decent callouses and my calves will be more used to that form.
Speaking of my changing form, I ran all 3.5 miles in my new shoes, the correct way! WIN. and so far, no soreness. If they aren't sore tomorrow I am going to run in them again, but no matter what I am not using them for my long run on saturday. I want to be more focused on simply finishing than I am on form. Plus I don't want to overdo it, and I don't want to have to change shoes in the middle of a run.
I can see myself wanting to run barefoot tomorrow. we'll see how I feel. It might be good practice to run at least one easy day outside to get used to wind resistance and to hills. Maybe every thursday will be barefoot thursday. It would be really good for my form and for my muscles. Hm.. I'm going to do some research on this matter.
IN ANY CASE, 7.8 POUNDS GONE. WHADDUP.

Still Dropping
Today, my final weigh-in of week four was 141.2. That puts week 4's average at 152.8, a 1.5 drop from last week! This also happens to be the longest streak of consecutive drops, so I'm not exactly expecting it to continue! I just hope that by the end of this week I'm below 150 consistantly.. 150 is just the top weight that I never, evvver want to go over. Can't wait to see the other side of it - it's been over 2 years now!
Today's run was pretty good... hard though. Very tough. I'm extremely exhausted - sleeping has been difficult for me. I have a lot of issues falling and staying asleep, and when I am sleeping it's not very deep and involves a lot of tossing and turning. bleck. It was a hill workout, and I've decided that T's hill will be a steady progression for a mile, and then repeat it for the second mile. .75mi for both warm up and cool down. I wore my newton's for both the warm up and cool down.. they are ahhmazing. sqeee. I had zero energy for the hills this morning though. It took every ounce of self discipline to keep on keepin on. The second mile I alternated running for .2 and walking for .05, just to lower my heart rate. I don't feel hungry at all, but since i had a low BS and was working at an anerobic level... it just didn't mix well. I also will need a break soon from this crazy workout schedule.. that's what next week is for! I think that I'm just going to do 15 miles that week and not cut back on strength training. I'll do a 2-3-3-2-5 monday thru fri.
Aight. Back to the books for me.

"Grassroots"
So some exciting news.. Yesterday I participated in a "grassroots" commercial for Newton shoes! With like, 150 other runners and kids from my community. It was so deathy hot outside, it was 6 oclock and the heat index was still 100. We just ran a few blocks and did silly things like ran backwards, and at one point everyone took their shoes off and threw them into the air. It was awesome! I even got a free hat :)I was super nervous about it before hand, because I didn't know exactly what to expect. But I am so glad that I went!
In other good news... my weight loss is progressing quite nicely! I think it's because I am finally off of my period. Yesterday I weighed in at 152.6 and today I weighed in at 151.6. !!!! I know, right? I'm not expecting myself to be able to keep that off totally, just because that's too much weight to lose over a 3 day period. I'll honestly just be happy to stay below 154 for a bit before dropping more weight. :) So just one more day, and week 4 will be in the books. Here's what this week has looked like so far:
W 154
Th 154
F 153.6
S 153.2
S 152.6
M 151.6
T ?????
The average for this week is currently 153.1, and I would kind of like to keep the average about 153.3 or less, to make it one full pound lost from last week's average. Also, I am officailly half way done!!! I have to keep reminding myself that it will get harder the longer I am dieting, and that the key is lifestyle changes. I'm feeling really great right now though! Man o man. So I want to lose 6.6 more pounds and school starts in four weeks... this means that I am half way through both with weight loss and the school countdown. I really doubt that I'll be able to keep up and lose 6.6 in a matter of 4 weeks. I'll setting for four pounds :) I just want it to start making a difference in my clothing. I guess things have been tigher on me that I've realized, because nothing is baggy yet. My "love handles" are visibly shrinking though, my face looks thinner, and I think my chest is a tad smaller!
Okay so about running. I simply ADORE my new shoes. Honestly, they are amazing. Wearing these old Nikes SUCKS. However, I have to take my time and get used to them, since it forces me to land on my forefoot instead of my heel. This is much better for my knees, but not so much for my calves, which are very sore today! People have warned me to take it very slow with them, and to use my old sneakers to keep up with my training. Even right now I'm worried about those shoes up in my gym locker.. hope I remembered to lock it?! Those things were super expensive - 150! Defintely more money than I've ever spent on shoes in my entire life. I'm hoping it's a good investment though - they should last twice as long as ordinary sneakers, and the upper is supposed to break down before the bottom.
So later today will be plyo, and I still haven't decided whether I am going to do that at home or at the gym. We'll see how I feel later. I didn't bring lunch so I will be getting home earlier than usual. Oh, also I have to remember to do an ab workout - I keep neglecting that muscle group.

new shooos!
Also, I weighed in at 153!!! Yay! I'm finally moving in the right direction! I will feel 100% better when I get below 150. Soo close! honestly just 3.2 pouns and I'll feel great. Tho' at the moment I'm just happy to be below 154. :)
In other good news, I FINALLY got a pair of newtons! Yikes! It's kind of scary.. I'm going to have to completely revamp my running form. It's just a difference, I had no idea until I actually tried them on. It's like having a rocking chair on the bottom of your midfoot. But I love them :)
Also, runners are the nicest people of all, I have decided. Some random older gentlement who had clearly just finished running upwards of fify miles put my grocery cart away for me when I had finished loading the car. How sweet is that?
ALSO, I might be in a commercial tomorrow! We will see if I am feeling brave enough ;) It would be in my new shoes for the company. I think lots of people will be there, but I'm still concerned about my form.. and since I'll be on video tape.. But i'm going to suck up and do it, because I know that I'll regret it otherwise!
I'm trying really hard today to watch what I'm eating so that I don't bounce to high up tomorrow. We're having dinner at our pastor's house which will definitely make it tough. But. I've been really good so far. My snack will be a serving of pretzels and nothing else, and after dinner I can have popcorn and nothing else. NO DESSERTS!

FINALLY
I weighed in at 153.6... thank god.. i was getting really sick of seeing it at 154 day after day! Now to just keep the scale below that!! Honestly even if I don't get any lower than 153.6 all week I'll just be glad to finally be below 154! I think part of the reason was that I took it really easy yesterday and I've always found that on my days off I tend to burn through way more calories than heavy workout days. Dunno why. Maybe because my body finally has time to make all that muscle? Because after my 2 miler I literally lay on the couch eating for 8 hours. I didn't really eat dinner, so that definitely helped.
Today was my long run day, and it was pretty awesome! I did 7 miles, at a 9:1 run walk ratio. It put me at a 14 m/m which is a LOT slower than I want to run the half. I think next week I'll do the same ratio, but up my speed running to 11:30 instead of 12:15. I really do like the walking breaks, it helps break up the monotony of treadmill running. Also, yesterday Joshua and I drove the course and it is WAY more difficult than I thought it was going to be. Miles and miles of hills. Some miles of just uphill or flat with no downhill. ;alskdfjlsdjfsdf. I'm really going to need to up the intensity of my hill training!
Right now my goal time for the race is to get in under 3 hours. We'll see!! If I do manage to lose all this weight it will make this race a lot easier! Just gotta keep at it and keep eating over 1000 calories a day. None of this 500 calorie limit business that I take on when I get impatient!
I'm having a bit of a bigger breakfast because I was pretty darn hungry. Somewhere between 250-300 calories. Lunch will be a salad, an egg sandwich and popcorn (300). Snack will be kashi, pretzels and oatmeal (300). Dinner will be a flatbread pizza and salad (300) and dessert will be popcorn and pretzels (150) for a total of 1350-1500. I AM going to make it through an entire day of sticking to my meals plans. Just watch!! NO peanut butter and NO frosting and NO cupcakes. Oh, and NO eating before the time!!
Okay. That aught to do.

Tired
I am exhausted. utterly wiped. It's from all of these workouts on top of getting <8hrs of sleep a night, when my body requires 9 to be fully functional. bleck.
I weighed in at 154 AGAIN this morning, so that's a no-go on being under that all week. But, maybe that will be my week's highest. One can hope. I've really got to reign in my post-dinner eating. That's where my biggest problem lies. Yesterday I bought those 100 calories wraps, so for lunches I will have a veggie wrap with a smidge of dressing, a peice of fruit, and 1/2 serving of pretzels(350). Breakfast is still kashi(150). Snack will be ONLY at three (no more cheating!) and will be an egg sanwich with 75%reduced fat cheese, soymilk, and popcorn (350). Dinner will still be whatever Joshua is having (<500) and snack will be popcorn BEFORE nine o'clock. No cheating on this either. If I follow this I will be eating <1500 which really should be the maximum number of calories I eat if I really want to lose weight. I have pudding in the fridge, low cal, which I can snack on INSTEAD of frosting if I have a sweet tooth. It's incredibly rich and the entire contanier has only 230 calories in it.
Today's run was ok, not as great as yesterday's but still really good. I was pretty wiped, as I mentioned, so I did the 4:1 run walk ratio, and kept the incline at 4% for that middle 1.5mi. My legs are tiiired. I'm also doing the p90x leg routine today, but I am not going to push it at all. I'm going to be super careful with my lunges, not dipping far down and not using weights. I am starting to see a small difference in my body. I can't feel it in my clothing yet, but I can see less of a muffin top (FINALLY). Just can't wait to drop a cup size.
Okay so tomorrow's plan is to run an easy 2 miler without walking breaks, and for my second workout to walk two miles on the treadmill. Friday will my a 7-er, followed by an upperbody and ab workout. I think I should be just fine doing the 7 miles as long as I take my time and allow myself plenty of walking breaks. I'm going to aim for a 6:1 run walk ration, writing down on a peice of paper at what minute to stop and walk so I don't have to do math in my head. for example, walk until it's been a minute, from minutes walk 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, and so on.
man I am exhausted.

End of Third Week
Okay to catch up on the weekend. Friday's long run was great! I did a run walk ratio of 4:1 until the last half mile, so it took me a while to do it all. BUT it definitely helped me mentally deal with running again. I'm going to continue taking walk breaks as my mind needs them, but I think I'm quickly getting used to it again :) I had no soreness or tiredness after my run, which is a good sign, since I'll need to run 2.5 times that distance in a few short weeks!! I didn't work out on Saturday, but I didn't eat much at all which helped to offset that. I had fruit salad (probably way too much, but it was soo tasty), a cold cut sandwich without much of the bread, a cupcake, a bowl of soup, a breadstick and a few servings of salad (good ol' olive garden!). Sunday (my birthday!) I ate decently, wasn't even tempted by the desserts at the picnic. I played a lot of soccer so I got some running in (can I call that a speed workout??!) which was a lot of fun even tho I am absolutely horrendous at soccer.
Yesterday I weighed in at 154 AGAIN, I can't seem to break past that. I thought I ate pretty well, but wasn't really paying too much attention, which is probably why I weigh more today than I would have liked. My run was great, a two miler without any mental walking breaks, around the track.
This morning's weigh-in marked the end of week three. it was 154.6 (Boo) which put me at an average of 154.3, a .9 lb loss from week 2's average. I need to intensify this weight loss thing!! Part of this not-losing-weight problem is that i eat very late into the night. This needs to end. I can only allow myself 1 post dinner snack of 150 calories, and i need to be strict about it!!
Also, I need to cut back on the number of pretzels I eat every day. 2 servings, 200 calories total should be more than enough for a day. I can break that down into 4 servings to have 4 different times. I think popcorn and 1/2 serving of pretzels is a perfect post dinner snack. 150 calories and very satisfying.
My goal is to have week four ALWAYS be under 154.0.. So i'll have to really cut back today. No more eating icing and cupcakes... a major downfall of mine! SO many hidden calories and totally not worth it when i can make delish lower cal cookies :)So here's what I'm going to try to do today, and we'll see how the scale responds. Breakfast will be at 9 o'clock as usual and will be a serving of cereal, 140 calories. Lunch will be at noon and will be popcorn, 1/2 serving of pretzels and an apple at around 300 calories. Snack will be at three and will be an egg sandwich on a english muffin with a yogurt, 300 calories. Dinner will be at 6 and will be whatever Joshua wants to have for dinner (Grilled chicken??) and snack will be whenever at the 150 calories. this will be 890 calories plus dinner which will be under 500 calories, putting my day at a max of 1390.
At least I had a great workout this morning! i think I would feel very discouraged if I hadn't. It was a three miler with 1.5 miles of hills. I started at a 2.5% incline which was CAKE, so I upped it to 4% which was still not much of a push. Since hills at antietam are brutal, I think I will replace my Wednesday speed workouts with additional hills. I can do a bit of speed stuff at the end of every work out. PLus, I realy don't care how long it takes me to finish FR, as long as I can finish it running!! I think tomorrow I'll set teh incline at 6%. I warmed up with a .75 and finished with a .75 which made only a mile and a half of hills, but it worked out well. I took a few walking breaks during my hill time, but I'm ok with that for now. We will see how my legs are acting tomorrow! I can't wait until I can impliment that P90X workout back into my routine, but I think I will give it one more week. I don't want to aggravate that muscle torn up by all those lunges! However, I can already notice a real difference from doing plyometrics. My legs feel SO much stronger now!
Well that's all I got for now. over and out!

Friday, thank god
Once again I am freezing in the library.. and once again I am super tired. I haven't worked out yet, since today is my long run I'm forgoing the double workout, and waiting until eleven to run so my food will have some time to start digesting. I'll be having a bar at nine (170 calories, lots of simple sugars to digest quickly).
I'm definitely nervous about running my five miler, just because it will be my first real run and I'll get a better picture of how much muscle I've lost. From my most recent test runs I've gathered that my respiratory system and cardio system have definitly weakend.. today I'll be able to get a good measure of how far behind I am.
Hopefully my weight loss continues in order to offset any lack of training by the time Oct 1st comes along!
So I'm debating what to do with my birthday money. I'm leaning towards getting a pair of newtons, or other flat footwear. yesterday I ran a few steps barefoot outside and it felt aaamazing. I'm not brave enough to run alongside 45 barefoot just yet.. and hopefully I'll never be that brave. I really like the look of newtons, but I think it would be really fun to try a totally flat sneaker like a vibram five finger or something like that. However it might be pretty foolish to jump right into that without knowing how my body will respond. I'm having enough trouble getting back into it as is!
Anyway. This morning I weighed in at the exact same as yesterday morning. To me this means it's a "real" weight. Not just dehydration. In my illogical mind I wait for the second day at the same number for it to really count. I don't think I'll be at 153 in time for my birthday, but that's more than alright with me. As long as I can get down to 145 by the time school starts :)
I can't wait for people to start noticing. Last time I got really insecure about it, since it happened so fast and was such a stark change. I never wanted to talk about it to anyone besides Joshua and my parents, but I still LOVED that everyone made such a big deal about it. It also was different then - I had stopped "dieting" and was just restricting food by habit. I doubt I'll get there again since I don't have a wedding and major life change to initiate that type of behavior!
Well I'm going to kill time until I can eat breakfast by researching sneakers.
I'm definitely nervous about running my five miler, just because it will be my first real run and I'll get a better picture of how much muscle I've lost. From my most recent test runs I've gathered that my respiratory system and cardio system have definitly weakend.. today I'll be able to get a good measure of how far behind I am.

Mamma's Melody
So after my last entry I studied genetics for a while, then hiked it up to the gym again for round two. Since I'm going to be doing a "long" run tomorrow, and since my knee's been bothering me, I wanted to take it as easy as possible while still burning calories. So I walked on a treadmill and studied genetics for a half hour, then walked home and had lunch. Popcorn, pretzels, two cookies. !!!! What is it about dieting that always makes me want junk?? I know that I'll still lose weight since I'm restricting calories, but still. I guess part of it is that we don't have any fruit in the house, or good yogurt, and PB my good ol standby is just so very high in calories. hmf. I'm going to need to work on this.
After about two and a half hours of being a general bum (and watching The Prestige), I decided to walk back into town to buy myself an early birthday smoothie, a momma's melody from mellow moods, as my three o'clock meal. This means that my total mileage for today has been a minimum of seven miles. nine miles if I walk back home instead of waiting for Joshua. :) Three miles at the gym, six walking around town and home. Not too shabby! Can't wait to see if I have any major weight loss! The best birthday gift would be a drop to 150, but dropping four pounds in two days would be a bit much. It would only be water weight anyhow. And what's the point of being dehydrated when you're a runner? So... I guess I'll hope for a one pound drop between saturday (when I'm celebrating) and now.
I was reading this blog yesterday about a morbidly obese woman who dropped fifty pounds without anybody noticing. Jeeze. I'm happy with my four. Not that anyone but me and my belt (which is at that uncomfortable spot where one hole makes it too big and one makes it too small) have noticed.
Alright. Enough's enough.
Plan for tomorrow is as follows: sleep in until eight. Walk to library. Have breakfast, study medsurg, run five miles at eleven. DRINK GATORADE. diluted in half of course. calorie free of course. Follow with peanutbutter, banana, popcorn and soymilk.
Walk home around two, have a light snack, clean the house, make pizza, etc etc etc.
Saturday we'll be going to Susan's to celebrate my birthday by hanging out at the pool and going to see the final installment of Harry Potter. I'm definitly nervous about Saturday food-wise. I hate going to other people's houses when I'm trying to lose weight. Whenever people besides Joshua or my parents cook for me I feel like I need to eat a "normal" amount so that I don't come off as being rude. I think what I'll probably do is skip my nine and noon meals, have about 300 calories around eleven, and then not eat until dinner. That way I can have a normal dinner and the obligatory slice of birthday cake guilt-free. Maybe I'll be able to make it to the gym in the AM to burn off a few calories before hand.
I can't wait to get to the point in this diet where the weight just falls off and I don't even need to put thought into it; when it just becomes second nature. They say it takes twenty one days to form a habit. Today is day 16. This is the most consistent I've been about weight loss since we got married. And it's definitely off to the best start - eating 1200-1700 calories a day instead of the 500 like I used to whenever I wanted to drop a few pounds. I may not have a healthier attitude toward food, but at least I'm eating it without crying. Baby steps.
Yay! Joshua just called. He's getting out of work THREE HOURS earlier than he did yesterday. BEAM! This is also 35 minutes later than he is scheduled for:)
Now the great debate. Do I sit here and talk about losing weight, or go walk home and actually do it?
I think I just answered my own question.

The Good, the Bad, and the Chilly
The good: I'm down to 154.0, more than a 4lb drop from where I was a little over two weeks ago.
The bad: I fumbled on my running this morning. I am totally low on energy, which is probably related to getting less than 7 hours of sleep every night. I do better when I get 9+. which SUCKS since i loathe sleeping. I wish I could be one of those people who only need five or six. Sleeping is juch such a time waster.
Oh, and I'm cold here in the library.
Well.. focusing on the positives. I dropped about .6 from yesterday which was surprising since I about ate my body weight in junk food yesterday. If I keep up with this two lb a week drop I'll be 145 by the time school starts. !!!! But in order to keep up with that type of loss I'll have to cut about 1000 calories a day. Half from food and half from exercise.

Training begins again!
Back to blogging! It's always a great motivator in the begining of a training plan, but I never seem to update the weeks leading up to a race, so let's see if I can be consistant this time!
Okay well first off, here is my training plan:
Week 1: 1.5mi, 2.5mi, 2.5mi, 1.5mi, 5mi = 13 miles/week
Week 2: 1.5, 3, 3, 1.5, 7 = 16 miles/week
Week 3: 2, 3, 3, 2, 8 = 18 miles/week
week 4: 2, 2, 2, 2, 5 = 13 miles/week
Week 5: 2, 3, 3, 2, 9 = 19 miles/week
Week 6: 2, 4, 3, 2, 10 = 21 miles/week
Week 7: 2, 4, 3, 2, 11 = 22 miles/week
Week 8: 2, 3, 3, 2, 6 = 16 miles/week
Week 9: 2, 4, 3, 2, 12 = 23 miles/week
Week 10: 2, 4, 3, 2, 13 = 24 miles/week
Week 11: 2, 2, 2, 2, 6 = 14 miles/week
Week 12: 4, 3, 2, 1, RACE = 23.1 miles/week
I took about a month and a half off from serious running for a much needed mental break, so we'll see how fast I can up my mileage this time! It's supposed to be easier every time, and since I've been running (mostly) consistently for 2 and 1/2 years now, I don't think it should be too terribly bad. It's mostly going to be a mental struggle.
Lately I've been working out twice a day, M-F. Weight lifting or plyometrics in the morning, followed by running in the afternoon. It's been going great so far! I study in the library in between workouts and after running, so I think that I'll be able to update on a regular basis.
I'm also being pretty deligent about losing weight. I weigh in every morning, and occasionally in the evenings just for fun. It's been two full weeks, and I've lost three pounds. I want to lose at least ten more, but losing fifteen pounds would put me at my lowest weight in highschool. A weight that I only maintained for about a month, but I digress. My point is that I'll probably update about that on here too, to stay committed! I have a nice line graph taped up to a kitchen cabinet that I use to track my weight loss trends, and it's has a nice downward slope! The other thing that has helped is that I bought a new scale, a digital one with a .2 lb counter, which is 1000x easier to read than my old one, and much more accurate. The food plan that I've been following is this: small equal meals at 9, 12, 3, 6, and sometime after dinner. I don't count calories, I just use good judgement and avoid junky foods.
Here is what I've done this week for working out:
Monday - plyo (about a 50 minute power workout that absolutely KICKS my butt)
ran 2mi
Tuesday - ran 2.5 mi
plyo
Today - upper body strength training
will run 2.5 miles two hours from now
alright, that's more than enough for now.

Catch up
Well I haven't exactly been following my "training plan" like I had wanted to, but I think that I'll be getting P90X on monday, so I'll be able to start supplementing my running with that!
Let me tell you about my past few runs...
4/11: I ran to school, the back way, which I have rounded up quite librally to 3 miles. It wasn't that great of a run, I think I was too eager to get it over with. I ran way too fast and peetered out before I got to the nursing building.
4/13: I ran hills outside of my house. I would jog out and down, then sprint up the hill and jog to cool down. I repeated that four times, and then ran down the whole road to cool off. I felt pretty strong.
4/14: 1/2 mile repeats on a treadmill. I would run a 1/2 mile at 11:30m/m, then 10:30, 9:30, 8:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30. between each half mile I would walk for two minutes or so to lower my heart rate. it ended up being about 7 miles, including the walk home from the gym.
4/15: two miles on the treadmill... sucked. too eager to get it over with
4/16: walked in DC
4/17: hiked up MD heights
4/18: three on the treadmill while my mom did weights in the gym. also sucked, no energy, probably R/T hiking
4/21: fartlets, one mile warm up, one mile cool down, three miles of speed workouts. I ran the three miles in 32:06. I went for 5 minutes at 12, 4 at 11, 3 at 10, 2 at 9, one at 8, two at 9, three at 10, four at 11, five at 12, four at 11, and that was that! I felt great.
4/22: I ran three verrrry slow indoor miles. I felt very fatigued from the day before
today: I ran eight miles, five outside and three indoors. I felt great! until teh very very end, and joshua ran the last hill to our house with me which was great!
Here's hoping casey remembered to burn P90X for me... !!!!
Goal weight: 145 baby

RACE DAY
Eh so, I stopped blogging. Obv. But I wanted to jot down some notes about today's race! Which was, in a word, AWESOME.
SO last night I managed to get about 5 hours of solid sleep. By solid, I of course mean that I woke up briefly every hour and then fell back asleep.
We took the metro in to the city, arriving at about six thirty. It was incredibly beautiful to watch the sun rise over the capital.
There were SO many friggin people there - loved it. Really inspiring to see a blind man lining up to race :). Also, I'm pretty sure that he was 100x faster than me.
I was in the green coral, second to last, targeted pace for the group was 1hr 40-59mins. My best case scenario goal was to finish at 1hr 55mins. My medium case scenario was to beat 2 hours. My main goal was simply to finish. And finish I did!
The first mile wasn't to bad, I was very careful to pace myself, which sucked because I had to watch everyone pass me. But I was rewarded at the one mile mark to see that I had kept an even 11:30 m/m pace; my goal. One of my favorite parts of that first mile was crossing paths with the top finishers - the kenyans. they were BEAUTIFUL!
Miles 1-2 sucked, because I missed the mile marker, so I had no idea what was going on. Plus I was starting to seriously overheat.
Mile 3 I stopped, and took off both of my top layers, tied one around my waist, and carried the other. It was one hundred times better, and knowing that at the 5mile marker I would see joshua and susan really made this mile awesome.
Mile 4 was pretty good, since I was all jazzed up about running past joshua, and I was feeling great.
Miles 6-7.5 were HOT. I was majorly over heated, mostly because I was seriously dehydrated. at the second aid station that I passed, I guzzled down two waters and a gatorade, and walked for about 2 minutes. I do believe that quick respite saved my race! I had been seriously ready to give up completely.
mile 8 was my FAVORITE. we changed directions so the sun was behind us, and we had a great cool wind in our faces. I seriously felt light as a bird.
mile 9 I unplugged my headphones, and run like all hell. I started to lose energy, but the momentum of the spectators really kept me going. I saw J and S right before the finish line, which gave me the kick to really push for it. This mile I passed many people, in my mind making up for the first few.
Favorite moments include: the sign that said "Tiger Blood" in reference to Charlie Sheen; a picnic table at mile 8 with a sign that said "Free Beer and Oreos"; the entire mile 8; FINISHING!; the gingerbread muffin at the end; how there were 195 portapoties, but they only had the key for 20; finishing in 1:51:22 with an average pace of 11:09; running negative splits!

Blehh
Last week was ANOTHER bad running week. Friday was a 7.5 miler, and it about killed me. It really got to me emotionally, but I'm just trying to get over it.
Saturday I was all day, which was awesome of course, but left me pretty incredibly sore. I took sat-tues off from running, so when I went to run yesterday I was not too excited.
But... It turned out to be a great run! I did it around the track with Meghan and we covered something like 4 miles though neither of us was keeping count. The first two were hard, but definetly for mental/ emotional reasons. The second two were great!
We're going to be at the gym again tonight which will be good, Friday I'll take the day off, and sat will be my first ever eight miler!! Furthest I've ever run!! Though cometo think of it, so was the 7.5-er last week!
We're getting close to race day folks!

Blog Fail
I knew it had been a few days since my last post... didn't realize it had been over a week!
So, here's the quick and dirty update:
Last week was my rest week, so i did 2 milers on tuesday, wednesday, thursday and saturday and an outdoor five miler on sunday (in 60 degree sunshine!!)
This week I've been REALLY struggling to find motivation to run.. and I never seem to enjoy them.
Monday I skipped my run
Tuesday I postponed my run until after dinner.. and only managed to squeak out 1.5 30 minutes after pigging out on tacos >:(
Today (Wednesday) I eaked out 3 outdoor miles (once again in 60 degree sunshine!!)
So for the upcoming week: Ths will be 1.5; Fri will be 7.5; Sat will be snowboarding (!!!!!) and sun will be 3. Grand total should be 18 miles.
Next meal is in 14 minutes.. yes i'm counting down.. i'm starrvviinngg!
Oh, and school you ask? Meh. So far my exams have been in the low 90s.. I guess i'll have a chance to get A's again after all? Perhaps... perhaps..
...perhaps I demand too much of myself!
now, out to enjoy me some sunshine :)
Next meal is in 14 minutes.. yes i'm counting down.. i'm starrvviinngg!

study break!
Basically all I've done all day is study for my stupid fund. exam.. and my brain has officially turned to mush.
So, recap of the past few days. Thursday I had a three mile run, and I think it went pretty well, though I can't really remember the specificis. I know I did two on the treadmill and one around the track. It was in the morning before lab. OH - and I did ab and arm weight lifting excersizes.. today is the first day that my stomach isn't killing me. I am so weak!
Friday I was tempted to go to the gym and do some cross training, but i knew deep down that I needed a day off, so I rested instead. Glad I did!
Yesterday I had my long run (of course). I did seven miles at the gym, 2.5 tread, 2 track, 2.5 tread. It was soooo much fun! I love my long runs best of all. I feel so strong at the end. I managed to sprint out the last .5 miles, which means I have so much left in the tank :) I had minimal leg pain, which makes it even better. And no GI issues at all. One thing I did that really helped was that I diluted my gatorade by 50%. That was it wasn't so irritating to my stomach. It made it much easier to drink! Following the run I did full body stretches - something that I've really improved on lately.
Today I did two miles outside, down and around food lion and back. It was a beautiful run! First warm, sunny day in a while. I was able to run in a hoodie and shorts and was pretty warm! I had a little bit of abd. issues but that was because I had a fairly large lunch 1.5 hrs before hand.
This week will be my rest week, so I'll do 4 2milers and a 5 mile long run. The week after that will begin my speed training!
So my total mileage for this week was 18 (!) miles.. more than I've run in forever. I know. That's not much at all. But gimme a break :)
My total mileage for the month of january was appx 57 miles.. pretty sweet! I'll definitely need new shoes by this summer!
Okay okay. I know. Back to the books.

A new month
Man, I haven't been great about posting lately. I'm assuming I wrote about my 6.5 run on Friday.
So I'll start off on Saturday. It was supposed to be my day off, but we were in dupont circle, and I just couldn't not run through the city. So I got up early and did somewhere around three miles, though I probably rounded up since I had to wait at at stoplights. It was so much fun though! I want to move there (to DC, not Dupont circle) and run by the white house and capital everyday. Seriously. Running would be so much more fun with all those options!
I didn't run sunday, though, so it evened out I guess. I also took Monday off.
Yesterday was a three miler, which didn't happen until after dinner. I had chicken and rice, and I totally knew while u was eating that it was gonna cause problems. And it did. I really almost quit after a half mile. But I took short walking breaks every half mile for the first two, and then ran the third one straight out

Good run after a bad week
I can't remember when my last post was, Tuesday maybe? Well my Wednesday run was terrible too. Just a two miler. But I had NO energy at all. And I got really overheated really quickly. It was so weird and frustrating.
Since I decided to go to DC, I switched my long run to today since I knew by sunday I'd be even more exhausted. My IT band was really tight all morning, which conserned me a bit, but I was determined to run anyway.
I warmed up with a slow .3mi, and stretched briefly. Then I did two miles on the treadmill. .5mi in my left knee was killing me. Well, it hurt, but I ran through it and watched House as a destraction. I then did 2 miles around the track. My knee was really bugging me, but about halfway through that mt gait evened out or something, and the pain subsided. I did 2.2 more mikes on the treadmill, doing an 11m/mi for the last mile, and pushing it up to 7mph at the last third of a mile. I didn't have quite as much energy left over as I did last week, but I still felt really, really strong. I mean, nothing makes you feel as good as a solid long run.
My right knee felt really swollen immediately afterward, but I think it's ok now. I've given up baths, which I think was contributing to my chronic knee aches.
They feel ok right now too. Some minor aches amd pains every bow and then, but probably only because I didn't stretch adequately afterwards. When do I ever stretch enough??! I need to work on that.
So on Sunday I am scheduled for a three miler. That had better get done.. It will put me at 14.5 miles for the week. For whatever reason I am incapable of hitting fifteen!! Next week, if stay on target (which NEVER) happens, I will run 16 miles total, and seven on Saturday! And in three weeks I'll run further than I've ever run before!!

loooooooow energy
Ehhhh it was just one of those runs this morning. I felt heavy on my feet and there was no fuel in the tank at all..
But I still pushed through, and did 3 miles. The middle mile I did 15 seconds of fast running with 45 seconds of slow jogging.
Don't have much to say about the run beyond that. I was tired, I pushed through, glad its done, hope I have more energy tomorrow.

Can't keep count
Yesterday was supposed to be a two miler around the track (there's a cold front going through right now so outside running I out of the question. I had some major trouble keeping track of my loops though, and since I didn't look at the time before I started, I have no clue how far I ran. I'm assuming it's somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 miles, but I've no idea. It was kind of nice though, to just be so consumed with runnin that I forget to think..
Considerig it was the day after my long run I expected more pain, but after some good stretching I felt fine. Low on energy, but no pain or soreness.
Today is a rest day, and tomorrow is a three miler.
The total mileage for this week was 13 miles. If I stay on target, next week it will be 15.5, and the following week 17.
Over and out!

I need a running partner...
...because I need someone to talk to about how exciting it all is!! And even though he completely denies it, I think Joshua is getting a bit tired of hearing me talk about it all the time. Øh måń.
Six easy miles
For whatever reason I was pretty worried that I wouldn't be able to make it, but I did great! Two miles on the treadmill, two around the track, two on the treadmill. Around 4.25 miles I had some GI issues but a two minute bathroom break fixed everything. I had so much energy left in the tank that I sprinted the last .25 mile. Felt awesome! It helped that I had uploaded more music to my iPhone.
My left knee felt a but swollen for the last two miles, but now my right is absolutely aching. Ohh well.
Also, I ran two miles on thursday and took Friday off. Tomorrow I have a two miler and weight training.

Fun run
Well it's not been the best week for me, running-wise, I was sick on Tuesday, so I didn't get around to a run. So I was a little extra strong for yesterdays run. I was supposed to be only two miles, but I was having so much fun, I didn't stop until 3.

Five weeks down, eleven to go!
This was the hardest week of training so far, due to my knee issues, but thankfully it was also a recovery week. Looks like I needed one.
Saturday I ran two miles on the treadmill after a solid warm up and stretching session. My knee felt a little funny after mile one, so I increased from a 12 min/mi to a ten, and it felt a lot better. I might try bumping it up to an 11 min/mi next time to see if my gait straightens out. When I got home I iced my legs for a while.
Yesterday I didn't get my "long" run in until the late afternoon because a couple from church took us out to lunch. I've also not been able to run before hand because we are attending a class. Anyway, I wa a litle apprehensive about running on a full stomach, but I had to fit it in. This week I was scheduled to do four miles. I ran to the gym, did a mile on the treadmill, and ran home. It was so much fun!! I needed a good, long run so badly. I'm glad it wasn't a full long training run though, it was nice to not have to push it. Next week is a six miler, an I might do the same sort of thing - run to the gym, do 3 miles, and run home. Nice to switch it up, especially since I always run alone.
So the total number of miles this week was only 10, since I missed a 2 miler. Next week was supposed to be 17, but it's only 13 now. I've added a third rest day in for the week to make sure my knee can handle training again. But like I said, six miles on Sunday!!

The knee became a problem
After my last post, both of my knees started acting up. It still really hurts to cross my legs, and they hurt to twist. So I took w and th off, which was really hard to do.
Today they felt no better, but since it didn't hurt to walk, I decided to do 2 miles around the track. My legs were SO happy to be back at it! And zero knee issues while I ran. I stretched the outside of my legs a lot when I finished, cuz I think the true cause was my IT band.

6:30 is just so EARLY
Imagine how I'll feel getting up at five..
But I muscled through my workout (ha, "workout," it was just a short run).
My calf siezed up two minutes in, but after some quality stretching, it relaxed.
My knee felt a bit tight too, I should have iced it before leaving the house.
I'm trying to reign in my eating, I need to loose at least 7 lbs, and I think I'll see a lot of knee improvements once I do.

This is when training REALY begins
I got my first taste of what it will be like in the program - last minute reading assignments, inconsistencies, poor communication, etc.
But I managed to kick my butt into gear and get to the gym for my easy two miler. Thank god I did! Nothing relieves stress like a run! It was easy, relatively painless, and fun. I should have iced my knee tho...
So the total mileage for this week was 14.5 miles. Last week I reported 14.4, but it was really 13.4.. So I am up 1.1 miles. Yay me.. Baby steps, folks, baby steps.
Also, I need to stop rewarding myself with crappy food..
Next week I am due to run 13 milers, with four as my long run, a 10% decrease from this week (ish). Tomorrow I have off completely from working out - yay!
I am a bit worried about remaining committed to early morning runs...
We will see!! This semester is going to be CRAZy!

5.5!
Yesterday I skipped my run - I meant to do a two miler but I had forgotten that my shoes were at the gym. So once again, I replaced my cross training day with a non workout. Bleh. I did get a long walk in at least! We went to Winchester at the spur of the moment and didn't get back until midnight. So this morning I slept in pretty late and woke up with an empty stomach.. Two slices of pizza later I was ready to call it quits.
An hour and a cup of tea later, I decided that I was in the mod for a run after all. I went to the gym and did all five and a half without a single walk break. After the first mile I developed a nagging cramp, which I always do if I run after eating. However, I convinced myself to run through it, telling myself that I loved the challenge.
I felt slightly weak and dizzy immediatly afterward, but after getting some calories in me, all was well. My left knee was (is) feeing irritated and slightly swollen, so I iced it for about 45 minutes following the run. I also stretches for once!
Tomorrow I plan to stretch a lot and ice my knee some more. I am doing a two miler, which I hope to do in the am outside before church. We'll see! I'm a little nervous about my knee..

Schools almost here again..
Today I have TEAS testing for the nursing program, so I got to the gym at seven to get my three miles in. I did the first 1.71 on the treadmill watching morning Joe, but I got so overheated that I switched to running around the track. Over all it wasn't that bad of a run. My knee is bothering me a bit now, though. I also didn't do any weight lifting.. Uggh. I need to get on that.
Yesterday I almost missed my two miler, but when Joshua got home from work he helped me get outside. I ran around five, down and around food lion again. I developed a cramp .5 miles in, but I lessened my pace Wichita made it bearable.
Tuesday I did NOT run,
But that's ok cuz I really needed a day off to rest. Not good to run six days a week with no rest after a long run!
Tomorrow I am doing another two miler, but this one will be at the gym in the evening. My long run will be on Saturday or Sunday, and will be 5.5 miles. Right now I'm due to run 15.5 miles this week - not too bad I guess.
I've noticed that my back is getting a lot stronger - it no longer hurts to hold it straight when I run! Not that I have great posture any other time tho!
Ok, battery on my phone's dying, time to go.

cold and sunny
This morning's run was a lot colder than it looked; i'm so glad that I opted for under armour. Especailly since it was only a short one and I had no time to heat up.
I ran from our house down and around Food Lion's parking lot and back up. I was really low on energy again this morning. I'm not sure if it was because yesterday was a long run, or of it's just from the lack of sleep I got last week. Hopefully I get over it, the past two runs I havent' really felt into it. I haven't felt any knee pain though, and I'd rather be bored than in pain any day!
It was really, really sunny out though, which was kind of fun. I tried to smile as I ran, to practice for the race, haha. I want to be a happy runner that inspires others... or at least LOOK like a happy runner.
Tomorrow I am due for a three miler, which I will go to the gym to do so that I can attempt some weight lifting. Also to give my body a break from the hills, cold, and wind that I've been dealing with for the past week. I'll run around the track though, because I'm fairly certain that the treadmill was the cause of my knee issues - maybe running slowly on it changed my gait or something.
I calculated my mileage for the month of December: 26.9 miles! Joshua joked that I could run a marathon now - if they gave me 31 days to do it in..
Yesterday marked the 21st day of training - I guess it's officailly a habit now (supposedly that's how long it takes to form) and it does feel a bit like one. Like I said yesterday, I don't really give myself the option NOT to run when its scheduled.
I may run fewer miles than are scheduled this week, because I don't want to bump it up too far too quickly. Last week I ran 14.4 miles, and if I do all that I've written down to do, this week I'd clock in at 17.5. I may drop one of my 3 milers down to 2, and a two miler down to 1.5, just to mentally give myself the break. I don't want to be all burnt out three months prior to my race! Especailly not burnt out the week that school starts.

A Sunday run
I managed to get out of bed this morning, somehow. I guess because I don't really consider running to be just an option. I'm so glad I did. It was my long run, five miles this time. I ran down across the bridge and back, plus a loop on my street to make it an even five. It was pretty warm for January, a little over 45 degrees. The first two miles were really nice, I listened to Celtic Psalms and felt very relaxed. The second half wasn't as nice but it wasn't bad either. I just felt really sleepy and groggy. Probably has something to do with my large sleep debt...
So I managed five outdoor miles in an hour, with a liberal use of walk breaks, especially up the hills. That is my target time for the race, so that boosted my confidence.
The total mileage for this week was 14.4
Tomorrow I have a two miler scheduled, plus I'm planning on lifting a lot to kind of catch up...
Sooo nervous about how my running will fare once school starts up. It might be just fine tho.. I'm planning on being at the gym by 6 every day.. Oh man.

The holidays are over - finally!
The past week was not such a great one training-wise, but I did have a couple really great runs.
Joshua got me gloves and an ear warmer thing, so I attempted a run on Xmas eve - only managed a mile because I had just eaten.
The next two days we were in PA celebrating with joshua's family, so I didn't Run at all. We did go for two short walks at least.
The next day I was way too exhausted to run, and I basically just sat around.
The 28th I ran only 1.2, and on the 29th I got up really early and did 2.2 before we left for Houghton. I had gotten new shoes the day before, Nike Pegasus. I LOVE them. I do not love the treadmill however and it is bothering my knees.
We were in houghton for the 30th, and I managed a two miler around campus. It was probably the best run I've had... Ever. It was twenty degrees out, very sunny, and there was just a nice covering of old snow. It was wonderful, and a much-needed reminder of why I run.
Yesterday morning I got up and ran again, just a bit under three miles. We were buffalo, so I ran onto elmwood ave. That was a pretty awesome run as well, the time just flew by.
